This story was written as a dare by Dax who asked me to write a story of 300 words about what Seven thought about in her maturation chamber.
Maturing
Darkness, my heart beating, thumps, thump, thump. Green, all around me, holding me in a warm
caress. I lie still, not afraid, waiting
for what I don’t know. Mummy, where are
you? No answer, never an answer.
“Annika, it is time for bed now darling.”
“Five more minutes, please.”
“Darling, you said that twenty minutes ago. Come along now sweetie and I will read you a
story.”
“Oooo, goodie, can we read the Cinderella one again? I hate those ugly sisters mummy, I am glad I
don’t have sisters”
I can’t see your face anymore. Mummy where are you?
Darkness. I am still
here, enclosed and alone. My muscles
twitch and stretch, I am growing taller but have no where to run.
I want to go home but don’t know how. I want to move but
can’t.
“Come on baby, blow out the candles and make a wish.”
“I wish for a baby sister.”
“Well Annika, your mother and I may not be able to deliver
that wish so do you have another?”
“I wish we lived in a big house with a garden, I wish we
stayed in one place and I had friends to play with. I wish I had a little kittie to play with.”
Darkness. How long
have I been here, wherever here is? I
sense people but I can’t see them. They
move but don’t talk. Will I ever talk
again? What would I say anyway?
The alarms are sounding, mummy and daddy are scared, I hide
under the desk. Strange people with
metal on their faces grab mummy. Daddy
is pushing them and yelling. They hit
daddy and I cry out. They look at me
with their strange silver eyes. They are
coming for me too.
Darkness, my heart beating, thumps, thump, thump
